Carol's Team is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease) and easing the suffering of the disease through the development of communication aids.
Our awareness and fund-raising activities center around Adventure Racing which, aside from being a lot of fun, is also a pretty good representation of everything that ALS takes away. Along with fitness and technique, successful teams must also communicate to work together. ALS robs patients of their endurance, coordination, and leaves them unable to speak.
It's a particularly cruel aspect of the disease that it attacks the most developed neurons first. Carol, being a vocalist and actress, lost her speech very early. The loss of communication is incredibly frustrating for anybody, but particularly tough for Carol since so much of her identity was wrapped up in her voice. Carol wrote that the worst part of the disease was having lots to say and not being able to say it. She felt trapped.
Communication aids currently exist that allow patients to express basic statements and, with considerable effort, original thoughts. We want to build a communication aid that greatly reduces the effort required for creative verbal expression. We want to call it Carol's Song.
